Depending on the country of issue, documents requiring presentation to authorities in Jamaica can be certified by means of an apostille or by consular legalization.

Apostille Certification

Apostille Certification is a simplified procedure to certify documents that are issued in a country that is one of the Signatories to the Apostille Convention.

An apostille is a special stamp affixed to the document by the foreign ministry or other accredited authority in the country of issue. This apostille will be recognised directly by authorities in Jamaica as demonstrating the document’s authenticity, without need for further certification.

Apostille countries include: US United StatesUnited States - GB United KingdomUnited Kingdom - IN IndiaIndia - HK Hong KongHong Kong - FR FranceFrance - DE GermanyGermany - ZA South AfricaSouth Africa - BR BrazilBrazil - KR South KoreaSouth Korea - JP JapanJapan

Consular Legalization

If the document is issued in a country that is NOT among the Signatories to the Apostille Convention then the document must be certified by consular legalization.

Consular legalization entails two certifications: First by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country where the documents were issued and then by the local Jamaican embassy or consulate.
