Persons residing abroad can obtain official copies of Mauritius marriage certificates, death and birth certificates by contacting the Central Civil Status Office. Applications may be submitted by post or email, or through an authorised representative in Mauritius. Foreign applicants need to provide a satisfactory proof of identity.

A Mauritius Certificate of Celibacy (Certificate of Single Status or no impediment to marriage) can be obtained from the Central Civil Status Office in Port Louis. Applications may be submitted in person or through an authorized representative.

A Mauritius Certificate of Character (Police Clearance Certificate) is available to Mauritius citizens and to non-citizens who have a residency or work permit in Mauritius. The Certificate states whether a person has previous criminal convictions recorded against them in Mauritius (crimes and misdemeanours appearing in the 2nd schedule). Mauritius Certificates of Character have no expiry and are issued in either English or French.

Applications can also be made in person at your local Police Divisional Headquarters. Where applications are made online, a digital certificate will be issued.
