Alaska Apostille FAQs

Alaska Apostilles can be issued for birth, death and marriage certificates that have been issued directly by Alaska’s Vital Records office. Copies certified by Alaska courts prior to 2005 will not generally be accepted and a new certified copy should be ordered from Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records.

Academic certificates issued in Alaska need to properly notarized by a commissioned Alaska notary public. To apostille the original school certificate, the notary will need to certify the original signature of the school registrars and incorporate a notarial certificate in accordance with Alaska statutory requirements.

Alaska university degree certificates, course transcripts and high school diplomas can also be authenticated as notarized copies. A true copy is certified by a notary (this can often be done from a scan without having to submit the original) and then authenticated with an Apostille Stamp from the Washington DC Secretary of State. Authenticated documents can also be attested by the embassies of Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates.

Documents certified by an Alaska Notary can be certified by apostille or authentication (depending on whether the country of destination is a signatory to the Hague Apostille Convention). Notarization must meet statutory requirements and include a notarial certificate.

Apostilles and authentication from Alaska can be provided for official certified copies of Alaska Vital Records, Court or other official state documents. Older certified copies may bear signatures that can’t be authenticated if the Lt. Governor's office does not have the signatures on file. Other documents such as powers of attorney and academic certificates may be authenticated or apostilled if properly notarized by a commissioned Alaska notary.

Documents signed by Federal officials including FBI Background Checks must be submitted directly to the Authentication Division of the U.S. Department of State.

If documents are required for submission to the authorities or consulate of a signatory country of the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille stamp affixed by the Secretary of State of Alaska will generally be recognized directly as confirming authenticity, although a certified translation may also be required if presenting to a country that does not have English as an official language.

If documents are required for presentation in a country that is not a signatory to the apostille convention (e.g. United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Taiwan, Vietnam), then an apostille stamp is not valid. Documents will need to be authenticated at State level in Alaska, then by the State Department Authentication Division, and finally by the embassy or consulate of the destination country in the United States. A Certified Translation may also be required.
