Legalize Ethiopian Documents

Ethiopian documents can be certified for cross-border use through legalization

Consular Legalization

Legalization is a procedure used when an Ethiopian document needs to be certified for official use abroad. Each document requires a double certification: first by the authorities of Ethiopia and secondly by the authorities of the country where the documents will be used (the receiving country). This second certification, which is generally provided by the embassy or consulate representing the receiving country in Ethiopia, confirms the first certification and so validates the document for official use in the receiving country.

Germany
Documents Required for Germany
Ethiopian public documents cannot be legalised for use in Germany. The German Embassy may agree to carry out a document verification, but only upon a request issued by a German authority. Copies of Ethiopian public documents can only be authenticated if the authenticity of the original can be determined without a doubt, i. e. documents with security features such as drivers’ licenses or passports.

Certified Translation

Where Ethiopian documents are to be used abroad and where the receiving country has a different official language, certified translation may also be required. Isarey takes care of any certified translations required as part of the document attestation process, ensuring that translations are carried out and certified in accordance with local regulations.

Note that a certified translation on its own only provides assurance that the translation itself is accurate and true; it does not confirm the authenticity of the original document. The original document must be legalized for a certified translation to carry equivalent legal weight.
